What should you pack for the Peaks of the Balkans? The complete packing list

Short answer

Pack light: a 30–40 litre backpack, broken-in hiking boots, layers for 5–35 °C, a rain jacket, sun protection, trekking poles, 2 litres of water capacity, an offline GPX map, a power bank, your passport, printed border permits and enough cash. If you stay in guesthouses you don't need a tent, stove or sleeping bag; a sleeping-bag liner is enough.

Most hikers carry far too much. On the Peaks of the Balkans you sleep and eat in guesthouses, so your pack can stay small – unless you camp.

The essentials

Category Item Why
Documents Passport, printed border permits, travel insurance Border patrols check permits
Money Cash in euros (and some lek) Few ATMs, cards rarely accepted
Navigation Offline map app with GPX track, phone, power bank Patchy waymarking in Kosovo
Footwear Broken-in hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes Rocky, steep paths
Poles Trekking poles Long descents
Water 2 l capacity, filter or tablets Springs are common but not always reliable
Sun Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 50 Little shade on high pastures

Clothing

  • Quick-dry T-shirts (2) and hiking shorts or trousers
  • Warm mid-layer (fleece or light down)
  • Waterproof jacket; waterproof trousers in June and September
  • Warm hat and light gloves for passes and cold mornings
  • Hiking socks (3 pairs)
  • Something clean and comfortable for the evenings

If you camp

  • Light tent, sleeping mat and a sleeping bag rated to about 5 °C
  • Headlamp
  • Earplugs: dogs and roosters start early

What you can leave at home

  • A stove and food for days (guesthouses cook)
  • A full sleeping bag if you stay indoors: a liner is enough
  • Heavy cameras and extra lenses: weight adds up on 1,000 m climbs

Pack less, or carry less

Two things make the biggest difference: a smaller pack and someone else carrying the rest. With The Balkan Trail you can rent a tent, sleeping bag, mat or poles, and add luggage transport so you only walk with a daypack.
