How was the 2026 season on the Peaks of the Balkans, and what changes in 2027?
Short answer
2026 started late: heavy winter snow kept the summer path between Theth and Valbonë closed until 27 May and left snowfields on the high passes into June. From July the trail was busy again, especially Theth – Valbonë. For 2027, expect similar or slightly higher guesthouse prices (€30–50 half board), apply for border permits at least 15 days ahead and book July–August beds early.

2026 in short

| Theth – Valbonë summer path | Closed until 27 May |
| Snow on high passes | Into June on north-facing slopes |

Popularity keeps growing
The Theth – Valbonë stage has become one of the most walked mountain paths in the Western Balkans. Figures from the GIZ-supported tourism programme counted more than 43,000 hikers on that section between July and November 2024. The rest of the loop remains much quieter.
What to know for 2027
- Book early for July and August, especially in Theth, Valbonë and Vusanje.
- Permits still need to be requested for all three countries; allow 15 days or more.
- June remains a gamble in heavy-snow years: ask locally before you go.
- Cash remains essential: card payments are still rare in the mountains.
Planning 2027 without the hassle
Organised departures for 2027 are already open. The Balkan Trail runs from June to September, with permits and transfers included.
