When is the best time to hike the Peaks of the Balkans?
Short answer
The best time is from early July to mid-September: the passes are usually snow-free, all guesthouses and summer huts are open and the days are long. September is often the sweet spot, with fewer people and stable weather. June can still have snow on the high passes, and from October many seasonal guesthouses close.

The Peaks of the Balkans reaches 1,700–2,300 m, and the Accursed Mountains catch a lot of winter snow. When you can go depends mostly on how much snow fell in winter and how fast it melts.
Month by month
| Month | Conditions | Guesthouses | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May | Snow on all high passes | Few open | Very quiet | Only for experienced winter hikers |
| June | Snowfields on passes, swollen streams | Most open from mid-June | Quiet | Possible in a dry year, check first |
| July | Snow mostly gone, warm to hot in valleys | All open | Busy, especially Theth–Valbonë | Very good |
| August | Hot (30 °C+ in valleys), afternoon storms | All open | Busiest month | Good, start early |
| September | Stable, cooler, clear views | All open | Fewer people | Excellent |
| October | Cold nights, first snow possible | Many seasonal huts close | Very quiet | Only early October, plan beds carefully |
The snow question
In heavy-snow years, the high passes stay white well into June. In 2026, a heavy winter kept the summer path from Theth to Valbonë closed until 27 May, and snowfields remained on several north-facing slopes into June. Before you go in June, ask guesthouses or local guides about the passes, and carry microspikes if there is any doubt.
Heat and thunderstorms
In July and August, the valleys around Theth, Valbonë and Plav can be hot. Start walking by 7:00 to cross the passes before the heat and before afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in the high mountains.
Crowds
The Theth – Valbonë stage is by far the busiest; tens of thousands of people walk it every summer. The rest of the loop, especially the Kosovo stages, stays quiet even in August.
Planning tip
If you want July or August, book guesthouses early. In September, beds are easier, but some summer huts on the plateaus (Dobërdol, Çerem) start closing towards the end of the month. The Balkan Trail departs from June to September, so dates and places to sleep are set before you leave.
